First District Water’s Lead-Free Initiative

First District Water has launched the Lead Service Line Inventory & Replacement Information program in response to updated EPA regulations concerning lead in drinking water. As part of these new requirements, water utilities must inform customers via mail if their water service line contains lead, is galvanized and needs replacement, or is of unknown material. If your service line falls into one of these categories, expect a letter from First District Water identifying your line as unknown, lead, or galvanized and requiring replacement.

Notification Timing

Letters will be sent out in mid to late November. If you do not receive a letter, it could be for one of the following reasons:

·       Your service line was installed in 1979 or later, ensuring it is non-lead due to post-ban installation.

·       You completed our online survey and indicated that your service line is non-lead.

·       First District Water’s records confirm your service line is non-lead based on historical data.

Survey Participation and Follow-up

If you completed our service line survey but received a letter stating your line material is unknown, don’t worry! We appreciate your participation. Each response undergoes a review process, which may take some time. There is no need to resubmit the survey. If clarification is needed, First District Water staff will contact you directly.

Ongoing Efforts

First District Water is actively working to identify the materials of over x service lines within our system. Customers with unknown service line materials are encouraged to identify their line’s material and report it to First District Water. You can submit this information through our Customer Self-Reporting Survey or by mailing a printed form from our website.

Commitment to Safety

First District Water has been proactive in preventing lead lines in our services. In July 1937, the Board of Commissioners approved only the use of brass or copper pipe on the District’s side of the service line. In October 1962, the Board approved only the use of copper pipe on both sides of the line: customer and District. We have consistently complied with the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule, maintaining lead levels well below the EPA’s action threshold. Our drinking water sources are free from lead and are not highly corrosive. Additionally, we have a robust history of applying corrosion-control treatments to prevent lead leaching from any service lines, plumbing, or fixtures that may contain lead.
